Empires have always sought to sound grand — it is one of the classic signs of their success. The Russian Empire built a great myth of a “great culture,” based, among other things, on Ukrainian material.
From the distortion of The Tale of Igor’s Campaign in Borodin’s works to the politicized concerts of modern performers — this lecture traces how the empire used art to assert its own ideology and distort historical meanings.
Special attention will be paid to Ukrainian artists who could realize themselves only through integration into the Russian cultural space — and thus became hostages of the system that appropriated their achievements.

Marta Kuzii — Associate Professor at the Department of Cultural Studies, Ukrainian Catholic University.
