ZAG invites you to a lecture by art historian Olena Polyakova (the_mysteztvo) “Shevchenko. The Prodigal Son” — a conversation about Taras Shevchenko as an artist who thinks in dialogue with world culture.

The lecture is based on a series of graphic works by Taras Shevchenko “The Prodigal Son”. In the title and theme, the Ukrainian artist refers to a biblical parable, but interprets it through the prism of the moral degeneration of the individual in the grip of Russian imperialism. Shevchenko’s Prodigal Son is not just a rascal and a sinner, but also a victim of his time and environment. The lecturer will talk about the history of the series’ creation, the mood and artistic language of the works, the hidden meanings embedded in the plasticity of the depicted figures, their attributes, and character
