About the Event

NOT ONLY AIVAZOVSKY

A discussion meeting with the team of the Odesa National Art Museum

We invite you to a conversation about the sea in Ukrainian art and about artists who still remain little known beyond Southern Ukraine. The seascapes from the collection of the Odesa National Art Museum represent different eras and artistic schools, yet outside Odesa most people still know only Aivazovsky and Kuindzhi.

The event is dedicated to the artists who shaped the polyphony of the Odesa school: Yehorov, Yastreb, Atsmanchuk, Lomikin, Matskevych, Roitburd, Palatnikov, Zhalobnyuk, and others. We will discuss how a museum collection is formed, why some contemporary works remain “in the shadow” of the 19th century, and how our perception of the sea and beauty changes in the context of war.

Speakers:

  • Yuliia Tomashevska-Harachuk, Head of the Research Department of the Odesa National Art Museum

  • Tetiana Tokarchuk, Chief Custodian of the Collections of the Odesa National Art Museum

In focus:

  • the experience of evacuating the collection and returning it to the public;

  • the museum team’s responsibility for preserving artistic heritage;

  • cooperation between the museum and the gallery during wartime as a gesture of support, gratitude, and solidarity between cities and institutions.

The event will be of interest to visitors of the exhibition “The Sea”, art researchers, students, museum and gallery professionals, collectors, and everyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of what the Ukrainian museum lives by today.
