Lecture by Karina Davydova "The Art of Outsiders"

About the Event

Zenyk Art Gallery invites you to a lecture by Karina Davydova “The Art of Outsiders” — about art that is born not according to the rules, but from an inner need to create. Zenyk Art Gallery invites you to a lecture by Karina Davydova “The Art of Outsiders” — a conversation about art brut and naive art that exist outside of academic canons and the usual rules of the art world. What distinguishes art brut from naive art? Where is the line between them and why has the work of self-taught artists and outsider artists become an important part of art history?

During the lecture, we will learn how the concept of art brut arose, talk about the features of naive art and trace how the attitude towards authors who created outside the professional artistic environment has changed. We will consider iconic names and the history of their works, the Ukrainian context and why today this art is represented in the world's leading museum collections. Let's take a closer look at these phenomena through the prism of the exhibition "OURS" - to discover new connections between the presented authors, their personal stories and the broader context of naive art and art brut.
