About the Event

Why did the Cabbage Grandfather, Eye, Khapun, Iron Granny and other mythological characters appear in Ukrainian folk tradition? During the lecture by Anastasia Kryvenko, we will talk about fairy-tale, mythological and folklore characters that frightened Ukrainian children about 100 years ago, their ethnographic features and place in folk pedagogy. We will find out why these images were so persistent, what educational functions they performed and what they can tell about the worldview of Ukrainians. This topic takes on a special resonance in the space of the exhibition "OUR", where the folk imagination comes to life in works of naive art and art brut. Fairy-tale beasts, fantastic creatures and images born from memory, folklore and children's imagination, resonate with mythological characters of Ukrainian tradition.
About the lecturer: Anastasia Kryvenko is a candidate of historical sciences in ethnology, head of the ethnography department of the Klimenty Sheptytsky Museum of Folk Architecture and Life in Lviv, senior research fellow at the Institute of Ethnology of the NAS of Ukraine, author of the ethnological blog folk.believes.
